Franklin County has been made aware of a phone scam involving individuals falsely claiming to be from the County Clerk’s Office. These callers may ask you to make a payment over the phone or provide sensitive personal information. In at least one reported incident, the caller already knew personal information about the individual, including their Social Security number and date of birth. Knowing this information does NOT mean the call is legitimate. IMPORTANT: The phone number displayed on your Caller ID may even appear to be the Franklin County Clerk’s Office. Scammers can use a technique called “spoofing” to make it appear that a call is coming from a legitimate phone number or government office. Do not rely on Caller ID alone to determine whether a call is legitimate. PLEASE REMEMBER: • The Franklin County Clerk’s Office DOES NOT accept payments over the phone. • If a payment is required, the Clerk’s Office will provide an email with a secure link to make the payment online. • Do NOT provide Social Security numbers, banking information, credit/debit card numbers, or other sensitive information to an unsolicited caller. • Do NOT make a payment to someone who calls claiming to represent the County Clerk’s Office. • If you receive a suspicious call, hang up — even if the Caller ID shows the County Clerk’s Office. Then call the Franklin County Clerk’s Office directly at 903-537-8357 to verify the request. • Please be vigilant and help us protect our community by sharing this alert with friends and family.
